Spicy Bang Bang Shrimp is a spicy pasta dish inspired by the Chinese take out dish called ‘Chef’s Spicy Shrimp’.  This recipe is my take on the take out flavors we just love, but with an Italian twist!   With ‘Fusilli con Buco’ as the pasta in the recipe…that Italian twist would be literally and figuratively.   Spicy Bang Bang Shrimp is a very versatile recipe that can be made with shrimp or chicken.

I have made this dish just short of a dozen times, to refine it and get the heat just right.  Spicy Bang Bang is excellent made with shrimp, but it is great made with diced chicken breast or tenders!  Changing the protein gives versatility to this recipe for our house.  So, if your family loves to spice things up like mine does, this will be a winner on your table too.

This recipe comes together quick and easy, so it can make life dinner easy after a day at work.

  • The sauce can be made a day ahead and kept in the fridge until you are ready to assemble.
  • The frozen Shrimp can be thawed in the fridge while you are at work during the day.
  • I buy the IQF cleaned shrimp, they are easier to peel.  IQF stands for ‘Individually Quick Frozen’, these will thaw quicker because they are not frozen together in a lump or block.
  • Choose the pasta that your family enjoys, or base it on your pantry contents.

I used a pasta named ‘Fusilli con Buco’ which is pictured below in the steps, it is one of my favorite pastas! ‘Fusilli con Buco’ is the pasta you would get if ‘Bucatini’ and ‘Fusilli’ had a baby!  ‘Bucatini’ is known as the Straw Like Pasta and ‘Fusilli’ is known as the Long Twisted Spaghetti.  Both do a super job increasing the amount of sauce you get in every bite, by holding sauce with in the hole that runs through them.

I included this dish in my parents Christmas Eve event to utilize the larger family gathering to have taste testers.  The family had a split verdict on the dish because of the heat level.  Based on their feedback, I revised the recipe, toning down the heat by cutting back on the amount of Sweet Chili Sauce and Red Pepper Flakes used.  I want to make sure that a wider audience would enjoy the level of heat that the Bang Bang Shrimp provided.

If you know your family is shy or not really keen on Hot and Spicy foods, then I would recommend you reduce the spices even further, so everyone can enjoy the dish.

Recipe Notes

Note:

I purchased the 'Fusilli con Buco' pasta from Delallo's Italian Market in Jeannette PA.  If you do not have a Delallo's near you and their products are not in one of your local supermarkets, you can substitute with 'Bucatini'.

When it comes to this Spicy Bang Bang Shrimp recipe, I have even used a gluten free Black Bean Pasta in the past.  I have to admit, it was very delicious. If you are gluten intolerant, you may want to try the Black Bean Pasta .  Sam's Club has one that I liked, but I am not very well versed on Gluten Free Pastas.
